Jay Kakaty
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University in 2001. Upon graduation I attended Thomas Cooley Law School where I attained my Juris Doctorate in 2004. Throughout law school I worked for various law firms as a clerk, but my most memorable experience was an internship with the National Recording Academy, or better known as the Grammys. I have always had a passion for music. However, I was not blessed with the musical talents that would allow me to be the next Jimmie Hendrix. After accepting my fate of becoming an attorney and not a musician, I have become driven to combine my two passions of law and music.
Immediately after law school I took a job working for a small firm in Royal Oak, Michigan. Ironically, I was not hired for the position I originally interviewed for, which was for an estate planning attorney, but rather I was hired to build the firm's entertainment/business law practice. During my first three years of practice, I represented clients through probate and federal court, and drafted estate plans and business plans that would help keep clients out of court. As my entertainment practice grew steadily, Crain's Detroit Business Magazine recognized me as one of their "Twenty in their 20's" in 2005. I worked for that small firm until 2007, when the attorneys decided to separate. At that point, I began my own practice where I continued to focus on probate, entertainment law, and estate and business planning. However, my solo practice life would be short lived, as I enjoy the team atmosphere of working with a firm. For that reason, I decided to join Shea Law Firm, PLLC, which has since been renamed Shea, Aiello, Doxsie & Petz, PLLC.
Today my practice remains the same, where I still focus on entertainment law, estate planning and business planning. Although I practice primarily out of the firm's Ann Arbor office, I also meet with clients in Grand Rapids, Okemos, Woodhaven, and Southfield.
